How to Handle Unexpected Archaeological Finds on the Job Site

Rich Reizen, Chair of Gould & Ratner's Construction Practice, talked to Construction Dive about the issues when coming across unexpected finds or items of historical value in a construction site.

Rich noted that “In Illinois and in many other jurisdictions, in the case of human remains, it’s incumbent upon project officials to first contact the coroner’s office.” In Illinois, according to Rich, the coroner must determine if the bones are over 100 years old. If so, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is the next call to make.

He added “that the process doesn’t roll along very quickly, however, if it looks like a recent crime may have been committed on the site.”
